3. As he had for months now, Adams struggled to keep a balance with the need, on one hand, for all possible haste, and the need, on the other, to keep from pushing too fast, forcing events too soon.

4. Some things, some people, must not be hurried. Time and timing were both of the essence, now more than ever. Reminders of time passing were everywhere about him: the great clock ticking away on the outside wlal of the State Hosue; bells at night striking the hour; the "clarions" of a hundred roosters calling across town as he began his day at first light.
