Summer Vacay Updates

This July we took a family vacation up north to the "UP" (upper peninsula of Michigan) and had a wonderful time. We forgot about the time difference and missed the last ferry over to Mackinac Island, so we chartered a plane over to the island. A storm started on the way over, which made for quite the bumpy ride. In a little six-seater plane it was pretty bouncy. EB showed no fear though and had his face pressed to the glass the whole time.

For those of you who don't know (where in the world have you been??!!!), Mackinac Island is where the movie Somewhere In Time was filmed. It's like stepping back in time on the island. No vehicles are allowed, the only transportation around the island is to ride a bike (which just about everybody does), ride in a horse drawn carriage or rent a horse and buggy to drive around. So, when we got to the airport we waited for our carriage to arrive. It was a beautiful ride across the island. Stevieb may have gotten tired of my telling him how much I loved the place.

We arrived at our resort - Mission Point - which was okay. I don't want to go into some of the problems we occurred there, but it certainly wasn't the four star resort it was ranked to be.

The next morning after breakfast, we grabbed some bikes to take a bike ride around the island. It was an 8 mile ride around the island, but we added an extra two so that Caleb could meet a scout requirement. The kids would have stayed on the bikes all day, but Stevieb and I were starting to walk like cowboys, so we decided to take a break after lunch and explore the town.

We also visited Fort Mackinac, where Steve and the kids marched some drills, watched some canons get fired and tried not to lose their hearing when the rifles were shot.



The kids found the jail, and of course, I was tempted to keep them locked up.

We explored the island over the next couple of days, we rode our bikes over to the Grand Hotel where Somewhere in Time was set and rode all over the island.

We returned by ferry to St. Ignace and then headed over the Mackinac Bridge (very famous bridge - very long bridge) to Mackinaw City.
