On Thursday, the 31st, we dropped Hubbub off at our wonderful "M" friends house as he was leaving for scout camp and wouldn't be joining us for the Hummer Invasion 2008 of Drummond Island. We met up with our friends, the Raff's and their Pavement Princess H2 (such a waste of a good vehicle) and headed up north to the U.P.
(riding the ferry made me homesick. We used to ride these whenever we went to Dartmouth.. xxx mum and dad)
We caught the ferry from De Tour, Michigan over to Drummond Island and drove to our resort, Drummond Island Resort (I know, very original name huh? ;} ) and got ourselves ready for the next day. There were already a group of hummers that couldn't wait for the festivities to begin the next day, and they headed off to the Turtle Ridge Off-Road Park for some night driving (we heard them return around 1am).
The next morning, the fun began. There were not as many hummers at this event as others we had been to, but a lot more H1's, which EB felt the need to flirt with all the drivers/owners shamelessly so that he could explore the interior of each and pretend to drive them. One of his favorites, was Bob, our guide, who has machine guns on the front of his.
(This is known as the steps.. the pictures do not do it justice, it's pretty tough driving)
(now, what color was our hummer again?)
Here are pics of our trip, they definitely don't do the toughness of the course justice. We drove for two days and the kids never tired of it. On the afternoon of the first day, EB fell asleep even though I couldn't get a clear shot of him as the hummer was bouncing all over the place.
(oh, there's a river in the way that's strewn with rocks, well let's just drive up that. NO problem for our little hummers)It was truly a wonderfully fun time and we made some fun new friends. Steve made a list of items he wished to purchase to Toughen Up his hummer. Kim made a list of cute hummer jewelry and clothing, plus a new hummer for herself, that she wanted. Dec decided that we needed to buy a cabin up north, so that he could go hunting, boating and off-roading. Little Princess giggled her way through the entire trip. EB drooled over all the hummers he sat in, plus all the hummers he hopes to sit him - this trip did nothing to tame his unnatural hummer addiction.
We all missed Caleb and wished that he were with us. One of the H1 owners, Tom, had his teenage year old daughter Molly driving all over the course. She was very impressive. Give Hubbub a couple of years and then maybe we'll see him taking his turn behind the wheel.
A dirty, but great time, was had by all.

Wow! I had no idea that Hummer fanatics did such things. Wasn't Steve nervous that he'd get his baby scratched or dented? Looks like a lot of fun in a beautiful area of the UP.
That is great! Looks like you guys had a lot of fun. It looks like a beautiful area too.
